Good morning, Durbanville!
We’ve officially hit the final stretch of January. While the rest of the country is nursing the "Janu-worry" blues, the energy in the 'Ville is picking up as we look toward a busy February. From the start of the wine harvest to the return of Saturday morning school fixtures, our local calendar is filling up fast.
Thank you to the 600+ of you who open the Hub every Friday—it’s great to have you with us for another edition.
The Water Watch: A Proactive Shift
We’ve had several questions about the dams lately. As of this week, our collective storage has dropped to 62.2%.
While we aren't in a crisis, the context is important: this time last year, we were sitting at over 81%. We are effectively almost 20% lower than we were in January 2025. With daily usage consistently peaking over 1 billion litres, the City has officially cautioned about a possible early drought cycle. There are no new restrictions yet, but it’s a good time to audit your irrigation timers.
Let’s lead the way in water-wise living. We all remember the lessons of Day Zero, and by taking small, proactive steps now, we can ensure our community stays resilient and our reserves stay healthy for the seasons to come.

The Hub’s "Need-to-Know" List
Commuter Watch: Expect heavier than usual congestion on the N1 Northbound on Friday afternoon. Construction teams are pushing to clear several "pothole blitz" sites near the Tygervalley and Durban Road off-ramps before the weekend—budget an extra 15 minutes for the school pick-up run.
Power Grid: Eskom has confirmed that Load Reduction (to manage transformer strain) will be active in several pockets on Friday. If you are in an Eskom-supplied zone like Pinehurst or Fisantekraal, the "Peak Management" windows are set for 05:00–09:00 and 17:00–22:00.
Utility Check: As January bills arrive, a reminder that we are still on Level 1 Water Tariffs. With the dams at 62%, staying within the lower usage brackets is the best way to avoid the "Janu-worry" price hike on your next municipal account.

The "Hidden Gem" Lunch: Wilde Vy Bistro
If you haven't visited Wilde Vy on Hooggelegen Farm yet, this is the weekend to do it. Set under a massive wild fig tree, it’s arguably the most tranquil lunch spot in the valley.
The Insider Tip: Try their seasonal "Small Plates" menu—it's the best way to sample the farm's produce.

Saturday Morning: Willowbridge Slow Market
The Slow Market (09:00–16:00) is the perfect hub for artisanal local produce. From organic veg to handmade crafts, it’s a Saturday ritual for many in the Northern Suburbs. It’s dog-friendly, too, so bring the whole family.
Pick Up a Racket: The Durbanville Padel Guide If you haven't tried the world's fastest-growing sport yet, our valley has become a bit of a Padel mecca. It’s easier to learn than tennis and far more social. Here is where to play:
Padel Now (Meerendal): Arguably the most scenic courts in the country. Great for a post-game coffee with a view of the dam.
Epic Padel (Virgin Active Pinehurst): A popular social hub with a vibrant community.
Bandeja Padel (Eversdal Sports Club): Right in the heart of the suburbs.
Eden Padel (Durbanville Hills): Perfect for those looking for premium indoor courts.
Pro Tip: Most courts are booked via the Playtomic app. Download it, find a "Public Match" at your level, and get involved!
