🎈 School Holiday Guide: Keeping Kids Busy in & Around 7550
With school out, here are top picks to keep children entertained over the next week:
Right Here in Durbanville
Oatlands Café (School Holiday Hidden Gem): Tucked away on Visserhok Road, Oatlands is a top family pick right now. It features a massive open lawn, dedicated outdoor play area, and mini pump track where kids can run wild, ride bikes, and tire themselves out while parents relax with a coffee on the patio.
Sensory Seekers at Anna Beulah Farm: Messy and multi-sensory play sessions running daily through 2 October. Great for toddlers and young kids to explore outdoors while you grab a coffee.
Free Entry to Tygerberg Nature Reserve (24–27 Sept): The City of Cape Town is offering free admission to Tygerberg Nature Reserve all weekend. Pack a picnic and head up for panoramic views across the valley.
Ipic Play & Battlefield Live: High-energy indoor climbing/play for younger ones at Ipic Play, or laser combat action in Durbanville for older kids and teens.
A Short Drive Away (Winelands & Nearby)
Winelands Light Railway (Stellenbosch): Ride miniature steam and diesel trains through scenic garden tracks—a massive hit for young families.
Exotic Animal World (Klapmuts): A sanctuary housing over 700 rescue animals, birds, and reptiles. Perfect for an interactive morning trip.
Wonderdal at Hazendal Wine Estate: Interactive digital edutainment centre for kids aged 5–13, combining outdoor climbing areas with educational games.
💧 Water Watch: Late Spring Top-Up
A late winter bump has pushed Cape Town's combined major dam levels up by 1.4% over the past week, bringing total storage to 76.6% (687,898 ML).
While it's a welcome weekly increase from last week's 75.2%, overall storage remains well below last year's bumper 92.3% at this time—so keeping water-wise remains a good habit as warmer weather sets in.
📜 Did You Know? 7550 History: The King Brothers Wagon Works
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Durbanville was home to King Bros Carriage and Wagon Builders, one of South Africa’s largest wagon works. Based around the present-day Heritage Square/Gladstone Street area, the works employed over 200 people and produced wagons, carts, and carriages used across the region. John King, one of the family’s leading figures, also helped shape civic life in Durbanville and was elected the town’s first mayor when it became a municipality in 1901.
🌸 Reader Photo Spotlight: Spring Flora in Full Bloom
A big thank you to reader Kathrin for sharing these stunning shots of local indigenous blooms defying the chilly September winds:
"Beautiful flowers blooming in September despite the chilly weather and crazy wind. The protea, the pincushion and a beautiful bush called wild sagewood."
