🎵 Worth the Drive: Joshua na die Reën Live in Malmesbury (Sat 25 July): I was chatting with the promoter of this event recently and promised to give our readers a proper early head-start on it. One of South Africa's most beloved acoustic singer-songwriters, Joshua na die Reën, is heading up the N7 for a deeply intimate performance on Saturday, 25 July at 18:00.
The Setting: Hosted inside the historic Swartland Moedergemeente Church in Malmesbury (about a 35-minute drive from the village), making for some truly incredible acoustics.
The Details: Tickets are R250 (Early Bird) or R280 (General) exclusively via Quicket. It's a fully cashless venue.
Here is a taste of what you can expect:
All bookings for Die Boer can be made directly on their website. For the Kultura Festival and Joshua na die Reën, you can head straight over to Quicket to lock down your spots before they fill up!
💬 2. The Valley Verdict: Did you visit Punjab or Oatlands Cafe?
In our last dispatch, we mapped out two highly anticipated new entries to our local lifestyle scene: the authentic, slow-cooked winter curries at Punjab Durbanville on Church Street, and the rustic, trail-side morning escape at Oatlands Cafe out on Vissershok Road.
Did you or your family manage to brave the mid-winter chill to test either of them out over the past week? If you dropped in for a meal, a warm cup of chai, or a post-ride coffee, hit reply and share your experience with us! We would love to hear what you ordered, how the service was, and if they lived up to the hype.
🚨 3. Market Watch: Durbanville Craft Market July Break
If you were planning on heading down to the patch of green outside the Durbanville Presbyterian Church on Louw Street for the traditional first-Saturday morning market routine, take note: The Durbanville Craft Market is officially closed for the month of July for its annual winter hibernation. Don't brave the morning chill for nothing—they will be back in full force on the first Saturday of August!

🚨 Suburban Security Watch: Vehicle Theft Warning
Local security groups have again reminded residents to remain alert to vehicle-theft risks, particularly around newer keyless-entry vehicles. Relay attacks, key cloning and signal jamming remain a concern nationally, with popular models such as Toyota Hilux, Fortuner and Corolla-family vehicles often mentioned in vehicle-theft warnings.
If you or your neighbours drive a newer vehicle, it is worth taking a few extra precautions. Where possible, park behind secure gates overnight, consider using a visible steering lock as an added deterrent and double-check that your vehicle tracking unit is active. Residents are also encouraged to keep their street WhatsApp groups active and to report suspicious vehicles, repeated slow drive-bys or possible scouting behaviour through their neighbourhood watch, security provider or SAPS channels.
🏛️ Durbanville Municipal Office Has Gone Fully Cashless
If you need to renew your vehicle licensing, pay an account or log a municipal query, leave your cash at home. As of Wednesday, 1 July 2026, the central Durbanville Municipal Office on Oxford Street has officially transitioned into a completely cashless operation as part of a City of Cape Town customer service pilot. They are now processing all walk-in transactions strictly via debit cards, credit cards or electronic channels to streamline service and improve on-site safety. The same cashless setup has taken effect at the Table Bay Mall licensing facility.
🍷 5. This Weekend's Wine Farm Pick: De Grendel
If you are looking for an idyllic winter afternoon destination to escape the house, De Grendel Wine Estate and Restaurant remains one of the absolute jewels on our local ridge. Steeped in deep South African history, the family-owned estate offers a spectacular vantage point to watch the winter light change over the valley.
The Tasting Lounge & Stoep: You can hunker down inside the elegant glass-fronted lounge or grab a sheltered spot on the stoep, offering uninterrupted, postcard-perfect views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic ocean and the rolling vineyards below. They serve an excellent gourmet artisanal snack platter on weekends to pair with their award-winning cool-climate wines.
The Experience: Beyond a simple tasting, it is a great spot to book a guided cellar tour or experience a long, celebratory winter lunch featuring contemporary Cape cuisine at their critically acclaimed restaurant.
Tip: Weekend space in the tasting room and restaurant fills up incredibly fast with out-of-towners, so booking a table ahead via their estate office is highly recommended.
🐾 6. Local Pet-Friendly Find: Kenridge Bark Park
Kenridge Bark Park (Opposite the Kenridge Centre)
If the kids are bouncing off the walls and your four-legged family members are staring at you with excessive energy, this is a spectacular community asset to utilise during the school holidays. The Kenridge Bark Park is a beautifully maintained, securely enclosed off-leash park that is completely free for locals to enjoy.
It is tailored specifically for socialised, non-aggressive dogs to run free and interact safely. The park features fantastic built-in canine agility course elements—including wooden ramps, obstacles and concrete tunnels for the dogs to explore—while offering plenty of park benches for owners to catch up and keep watch.
📸 Through Your Lens: Winter in the Valley
Bernadette Dicks sent in a "Real vs. Dream View" experiment. She took a gorgeous shot of the valley hills, but had a neighbouring house slightly obscuring the landscape. She used a touch of AI magic to cleanly erase the house and open up the view entirely. Take a look at the original vs the enhanced version below—it's amazing what technology can do for our property views 😀
