Good morning, Durbanville!

First things first—apologies for the radio silence in your inbox last Friday! Life outside the valley caught up with me, but we are back in action and double-packed with value this morning to make up for it.

I can’t quite believe we have officially crossed the winter solstice line and that the days are technically getting longer — even if these crisp mornings have your car thermometer suggesting otherwise. Am I getting slightly ahead of myself if I think we are on the downhill towards summer !?!

This morning, we are welcoming a fantastic new authentic Indian restaurant right to the heart of the village, highlighting a massive multi-month musical tribute production on our doorstep, celebrating our valley's brand-new collaborative wine and exploring an idyllic farm cafe to escape the suburban grid this Saturday.

Featuring a world-class 10-piece cast, it is a high-octane tribute paying homage to five towering icons who shaped music history: Michael Jackson, Cher, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder and Freddie Mercury.

🌶️ New in Town: Punjab Durbanville

13 Church Street (Diagonally opposite the Police Station)

Just the other day, I was sitting at home freezing and mentioned to my wife that we can never have too many great, authentic Indian options right in the village centre—especially when the winter chill sets in and nothing sounds better than a proper curry to warm you up from the inside out.

As if the universe was listening, a brand-new culinary addition has just quietly opened its doors right in the middle of town. Say hello to Punjab Durbanville.

The restaurant forms part of the Singh family’s Punjab story, which began as a popular takeaway back in 2014 and has since grown into a series of authentic, sit-down spaces while remaining completely faithful to its roots. While the exterior looks modest and unassuming, walking through the doors drops you straight into a vibrant, deeply welcoming environment close to home.

  • The Food Philosophy: Their official culinary focus is entirely on slow-cooked Punjabi heritage, utilising freshly ground, layered spices like cardamom, saffron, and fresh ginger. There are absolutely no shortcut, pre-made stir-in sauces here—the flavours are elegant and wonderfully subtle rather than overpowering.

  • The Menu: Their official kitchen offering features premium free-range chicken and grass-fed lamb alongside an impressive array of vegetarian and vegan plates. Their traditional curries, tandoori dishes, and kebabs are naturally prepared to be gluten-free and sugar-free.

  • Good to Know: The restaurant is open daily with shorter hours on a Sunday. Because requirements can vary, it is best to check directly with the team regarding specific halaal, alcohol or strict allergen details when making your booking.

If you go, trying a cup of their traditional Masala Chai is highly recommended. It is exactly the kind of cozy, soul-warming gathering spot our central grid needs during the colder months.

2. 🍷 Local Wine Pride: The 'Super Sauvignon' Story You Might Have Missed

There was some big news that dropped in the valley last month that might have completely escaped your main headlines or gone unnoticed amidst the winter rush, but it’s a story well worth catching up on.

The highly anticipated Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc 2026 has officially been bottled and released to the public. This marks the landmark 5th vintage of an extraordinary collective project that has firmly positioned Durbanville on the world map as the home of South Africa's "Super Sauvignon Blanc."

How the Story Began

The collaborative journey originally kicked off with the 2022 vintage. The concept was intentionally revolutionary: instead of competing for individual glory, ten of the region’s most prestigious, award-winning wineries agreed to put their best foot forward for the collective pride of the valley.

Every year, Diemersdal, De Grendel, Durbanville Hills, Groot Phesantekraal, Maastricht, Nitida, D'Aria, Bloemendal, Meerendal, and Klein Roosboom hand over a portion of their absolute finest, high-tier cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc fruit.

The estate winemakers then sit down together in a room as a unified panel, tasting through the individual tank components. To ensure the wine has a clear, definitive direction, they entrust the high-pressure responsibility of mastering the final blend to one local craftsman. For this 5th-anniversary 2026 bottling, the final blending honours were given to Juandré Bruwer of Diemersdal, working closely under the guidance of veteran blending panel chair Charles Hopkins of De Grendel.

The limited 2026 vintage retails for around R130 a bottle. It is available directly from the tasting rooms of the participating estates and via the central Durbanville Wine Valley Website. It’s an incredible piece of liquid local history that proves exactly what can happen when a community works together.

3. 🚜 Hidden Gem of the Week: Oatlands Cafe

Vissershok Road, Oatlands Farm, Durbanville

If you are looking for an escape from the usual suburban coffee shop routine this weekend, Oatlands Cafe is an absolute must-visit. I dropped by recently and had a really pleasant experience—it offers a beautifully rustic, open-sky farm environment that makes you feel completely removed from the city hustle.

It is an unpretentious spot with an old-world farmhouse charm, massive green lawns and towering shady trees looking out over the rolling hills.

  • The MTB Pit Stop: Located directly on the popular Tygerberg MTB trail network, it is a massive favourite for local weekend cyclists and hikers looking to refuel with a proper, strong cup of morning boeretroos or a hearty post-ride breakfast on the terrace.

  • The Family Setup: It's a total paradise if you have little ones in tow. There is an expansive outdoor play area complete with a jungle gym, a mini pump track for young riders (remember to bring their bikes and helmets!), and plenty of space to spread out on the grass.

  • The Menu: The offering is short, sweet and highly satisfying—ranging from excellent morning breakfasts (available until 11:00) to classic country lunches like burgers, wraps and chicken schnitzel.

Tip: You can book ahead for the elegant indoor farmhouse tables, but the outdoor patio and lawn spots are first-come, first-served. It's the perfect place for a relaxed weekend kuier with family and friends.

4. 🚧 Civic Corner: School Holiday Traffic Relief & Your Winter Fault-Logging Guide

If your morning routine involves battling the bumper-to-bumper crawl down Durbanville Avenue, Eversdal Road, or Jip de Jager Drive, you can look forward to a massive breather. Today marks the official end of the second school term, meaning our local roads are about to get significantly quieter for the next few weeks as the winter holidays kick off.

While the school run takes a break, the heavy June rains are still out in full force, which means peak season for localised flooding, blocked stormwater drains and fresh potholes opening up across the valley.

Instead of just complaining about that new crater on your morning commute, here is your quick-reference guide to getting things fixed fast via the City of Cape Town’s official reporting channels:

  • Potholes & Road Defects:
For potholes or damaged road surfaces, log a service request via the City of Cape Town app or the City’s online Service Request portal under Transport, Traffic and Roads. You can also call 0860 103 089. For roads and stormwater issues, the City also lists 0800 656 463 and [email protected]

  • Burst Pipes, Water Leaks & Streetlights:
For water, sewer and electricity-related faults, including streetlight issues, the City lists WhatsApp 060 018 1505 as one of the official reporting channels. Save the number, send a message, and follow the prompts. You can also use the City’s online Service Request portal.

  • Flooding & Blocked Drains:
For stormwater blockages or flooded roads causing a hazard, log a request via the City’s online Service Request portal or call 0860 103 089. For roads and stormwater issues, the City also lists 0800 656 463 and [email protected]. For emergencies or immediate danger, call 021 480 7700 or 112.

  • Fallen Trees:
With winter winds picking up, if a tree or large branch is blocking a public road, pavement or public open space, report it via the City’s standard Service Request portal under the relevant Roads/Stormwater or City Parks category. Use the road-obstruction category for road hazards, and the fallen tree/fallen branch category for parks or public open spaces.

Tip from experience: Always make sure to note down your reference number once your ticket is logged. It makes tracking the progress or escalating the issue through our local ward councillors significantly easier if the repair stalls!
