Good morning, Durbanville!

Brrrrr……the last day or two has been properly frosty out there! I have had more ‘warm cuppas’ than I wish to share and it looks like we may have to wait until next week before we get a couple of really nice sunny days—which is perfect timing, because we have the public holiday to look forward to next Tuesday, 16 June!

Whether you're pulling a cheeky 'bridge day' on Monday to secure a massive four-day long weekend, or just looking forward to a mid-week break, we've got you covered. Might also be worth stocking up on your wood supply if you haven’t already :)

Tonight, we have a world-class blues showdown happening right on our local fairways, a fantastic hidden-gem heritage spot hosting a big exhibition opening this Saturday, an interactive winemaking evening for next week, and a dedicated head-start planner for Father’s Day next weekend.

👨‍👧 Father's Day in the Valley — Sunday 21 June

If a live show at Die Boer isn't quite Dad's style, the valley has a beautiful alternative this Father's Day. Wilde Vy Bistro at Signal Gun Wines is hosting a specially curated three-course Sunday lunch on 21 June — guests are welcomed with ciabatta, herb butter and a drink on arrival before choosing from a menu that mixes countryside comfort with proper winter warmth. Set among the Durbanville vineyards, it's a genuinely special setting for a family lunch.

  • Date: Sunday 21 June

  • Price: R650 per person

  • Bookings: Essential — please contact Wilde Vy Bistro directly to secure your table.

🏛️ Local Gem of the Week: Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum

10 Wellington Road, Central Durbanville

Tucked away right in the heart of Durbanville, Rust-en-Vrede is one of those places many locals know about but do not visit often enough. Set in a beautifully preserved, historic national monument building (which originally dates back to the 1840s and has worn many hats over the years, including a police station, prison, and a magistrate's court), the gallery showcases fantastic South African art from both established and emerging artists.

🎨 Happening This Weekend:
If you are looking for the perfect excuse to drop by, the gallery is hosting the official Junior Portrait Award Finalist Exhibition Opening this Saturday, 13 June at 11:00. It is a fantastic opportunity to see some of the finest young artistic talent in the country and support the local art community.

The unique complex also houses an exclusive clay museum—a brilliant nod to Durbanville's local history of having some of the finest clay quarries and brickfields in the Western Cape. It makes for a lovely, low-key outing for a quiet morning, a rainy afternoon, or a quick culture stop close to home.

📜 A Quick Slice of 7550 History
Before it became the bustling valley we love today, our area was originally known as Pampoenkraal. It naturally developed around a strong freshwater spring that made it an essential outspan and watering point for travellers heading north from Cape Town. A formal village was laid out around 1806, renamed D’Urban in 1836 after Sir Benjamin D’Urban, and finally became Durbanville in 1886 to avoid any postal confusion with the city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.

🍷 Wine & Culinary Notes

Durbanville Hills Winter Blending Evening: Looking for a unique night out next week to beat the winter chill? Next Thursday, 18 June at 18:00, Durbanville Hills is hosting an exclusive interactive winemaking evening. For R595 per person, you'll enjoy a guided cellar tour, the chance to craft, bottle, and label your very own custom red blend to take home, followed by a premium, paired two-course dinner at the award-winning Tangram Restaurant. Space is strictly limited, so contact the estate directly to secure your spot.

🚗 Worth the Drive: Further Afield This Weekend

If you are planning to head past the hill into the city bowl or surrounding areas, here is the top event taking over Cape Town this weekend:

  • 🎭 Jive Cape Town Funny Festival (The Baxter Theatre): The city’s absolute favourite winter comedic relief is officially in full swing! Alan Committie hosts a stellar line-up of local and international acts at the Pam Golding Theatre. Running through to 21 June, it remains the ultimate night out to escape the winter blues. Tickets are available via Webtickets.
