Good morning, Durbanville!
The winter chill is officially settling into the valley, but the big news this weekend is the absolute festival of running taking over the Mother City. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is happening this weekend, and with running royalty in town, the energy is electric. Closer to home, we’re looking at a weekend packed with stellar local music, world-class comedy, and a legendary mind-bender making his yearly return to the valley.

1. 🏃♂️ The Mother City Race Alert: Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
If you or anyone you know is heading into the city or Southern Suburbs this weekend, take note: the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is officially underway this weekend (23–24 May).
Entering its final year of candidacy to join the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, the event has drawn global eyes—including double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, who landed at Cape Town International this week to participate.
The Schedule: Saturday features the 5km and 10km Peace Runs alongside the Table Mountain trail runs, while the main 42.2km road marathon kicks off early on Sunday morning.
The Logistics: Widespread road closures and strict "car-free route" parking restrictions start from Friday morning across Green Point, Sea Point, the CBD, Woodstock, Observatory, and down into Newlands. If you are travelling further afield this weekend, plan your routes carefully to avoid getting stuck!
2. 🏉 Local Pride: The Jade Brigade Wrap-Up
It wasn't the fairy-tale finish we were hoping for in Paarl last Saturday. Our local heroes, the Stellenberg High School 1st XV, put up a massive, brave fight but ultimately went down 29–7 to an exceptionally clinical Paarl Boys' High.
A few costly handling errors and the relentless tempo of the Boishaai "Blue Train" proved a tough hurdle to clear on the road. Despite the tough weekend at Brugstraat, the Jade Brigade has had an absolutely historic season that has put our side of the northern suburbs firmly on the national schoolboy rugby map. We are incredibly proud of the boys.
3. 🗓️ Your Weekend & Mid-Week Line-up
In the Valley:
Die Boer is absolutely packed with top-tier talent over the next few days, offering the perfect warm escape from the evening chill. To wrap up the weekend, the cousin himself, Barry Hilton, is in town for a special Sunday lunch comedy slot.
Looking slightly ahead to next week, Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist makes his highly anticipated yearly return to the valley on Wednesday, 27 May. Celebrating 35 years on stage, his brand-new show Planned Pandemonium promises a bold new shift in direction while delivering the classic entertainment we all love.

✈️ Cape Winelands Airport: Architects Appointed for R8bn Hub
The transformation of the former Fisantekraal airfield—located just 13km from Durbanville—into a massive commercial aviation hub took a major step forward this week. On 19 May 2026, developers officially appointed the award-winning South African firm Boogertman + Partners Architects to spearhead the master design and terminal identity.
Partnering with Germany’s Amd. Sigma, the architectural team will now shift from concept plans to concrete blueprints for a world-class passenger terminal designed to handle 2.5 million travellers annually by 2033. Ground-breaking and construction remain slated to kick off in the final quarter of this year (Q4 2026), moving the valley steadily closer to its targeted early 2028 opening.
🥾 Walk of the Week: Majik Forest
Van Riebeeckshof / Welgemoed Side
With the recent rains leaving the valley beautifully lush, the Majik Forest is looking spectacular this week. The undergrowth is vibrant green, the pathways are crisp, and the dams are full. It is the absolute perfect spot for a free Saturday morning family reset or a quiet dog walk. Just remember to pack a warm layer—those shaded pathways under the tree canopy get remarkably chilly by mid-afternoon.
