Good morning, Durbanville!

Last week many of you shared your "motherly wisdom" with us, and the responses were as heartwarming as they were practical. After the storms, the valley is looking exceptionally green, making it a perfect weekend for the Galileo season finale or a crisp morning hike in the Tygerberg.

Thanks for reading!

1. šŸ’§ The Final Water Watch Update

Our dams are officially sitting at 69.0% as of 14 May 2026. This is a massive jump from the start of the season, with the Wemmershoek dam leading the charge at 89.2%.

For a couple of months now, I have reported on these levels weekly, but given the recent rains, water security is no longer the immediate concern it was. As a result, I’ll be resting this section for now. The recent rains have effectively put a plaster on a problem that may well rear its head again in the future—if it ever becomes a concern again, I will bring this segment back immediately. For now, let's just enjoy the green hills!

2. šŸ—“ļø Your Weekend

šŸ† Local Pride: Supporting the #1 Team Did you know our local Stellenberg High School rugby team is currently the #1 ranked team in South Africa? While they are technically based just across the border in Bellville, the Stellenberg support in Durbanville is massive.

This Saturday, they take a drive out to Paarl to face Paarl Boys' High School in one of the final clashes against the "big rugby schools." They are on the brink of finishing the year as the #1 ranked team in SA for the first time ever. Why not drive out to Paarl this Saturday to back them? Grab a coffee at SADIECOFFEE Roastery and CafƩ and witness local history in the making.

You’ll also need a ticket to the rugby - grab them at itickets for R25

3. šŸ“° 7550 News

šŸ‡ Racecourse Development: 3,400+ Voices The opposition to the proposed Durbanville Racecourse development has surged. The petition led by resident Richard Downing now has over 3,400 signatures urging the City to reconsider the rezoning of open space for 980 residential units. Traffic congestion and the loss of environmental heritage remain the primary concerns for the 7550 community.

🄾 Walk of the Week: Golden Mole Trail

Tygerberg Nature Reserve (Welgemoed Entrance) This 3.6km trail is our top pick for a crisp May morning. It’s a medium-difficulty route that takes about 90 minutes and offers the best views of the valley.

šŸ’¬ Readers' Choice: Wisdom from Mom

Last week we asked for your favourite quotes from your mothers. Here are the top "Durbanville Mom-isms" that resonated most:

  • Elmi Smith: "Do what you do, do well."

  • Pat Addison: "If you can't afford the best, buy the best that you can afford." (Pat says this applies to everything—skincare, food, the lot!)

  • Victor van Vuuren: "Remember, don't do anything that I wouldn't do."

  • Linda Thorpe: Linda shared a treasure trove of advice, including: "Speak only positive things and seek only solutions" and the timeless "Waste not, want not."
