Good morning, Durbanville!
Before we dive into the news, I wanted to share a quick update on last week's poll. I have been genuinely overwhelmed by the positive comments—so many of you reached out to say you’re enjoying the weekly updates and want us to keep going. To every person who took a moment to reply: thank you. Your feedback is the fuel that keeps the Hub running (although a sponsor or two would also help 🫣 ), and I’m so glad this is proving useful to our community.
Let’s dive into it…
1. Local Pulse: The 6 April Deadline
Racecourse Development: The community-led petition against the proposed Durbanville Racecourse development continues to gain significant momentum. With well over 1,500 signatures already recorded, the scale of local concern is clear as we head into the final weeks of public participation.
Infrastructure Concerns: This isn’t just a debate about traffic; it’s about the 409 kilolitres of daily wastewater and 477 kilolitres of daily water demand that experts suggest our current systems aren't equipped to handle without major upgrades.
The Deadline: Formal objections must be submitted by Monday, 6 April. If you haven't yet registered as an "Interested & Affected Party," you can do so by emailing [email protected].
☕ Checking In: Did you visit our new locals? Last week we welcomed the new Platō branch at the High School circle and the legendary Holland Bakery to Pampoenkraal Lane. If you managed to pop in for a coffee or some authentic Dutch boterkoek, I’d love to hear about it! Reply to this email and share your experience—we might even feature your recommendation in next week's Dispatch.
2. The Weekend: Saturday in the 7550 & Beyond
The Cape Town Carnival (Saturday Night): The Carnival takes over the Green Point Fan Walk tomorrow evening. The parade starts at 18:00—a massive, free display of South African creativity.
The Farm Eatery at Diemersdal: If you want a lunch that feels like "old Durbanville," Diemersdal is the gold standard. Their restaurant is housed in a restored stable, and the courtyard is perfect for this cooler autumn weather. It’s busy, so if you’re planning to head there tomorrow, a quick booking via their website is a must.
3. The Big Stage: Pick Your Vibe
Durbanville’s two heavyweights have very different line-ups this week. Whether you’re looking for a sentimental "listening" experience or a neon-soaked 80s party, the choice is yours.
Option A: The Intimate Experience (Die Boer)
Tonight & Saturday (20:30): Tollie Parton presents Tottie en Nie Verder Nie. (Note: These shows are Fully Booked, but keep an eye on their socials for last-minute cancellations).
Sunday Matinee (22 March, 14:00): Hannes van Wyk & Coenraad Rall bring their beautiful show "Hartsbriewe" to the stage. It’s a nostalgic journey through letters and piano—the perfect "slow Sunday" plan.
Next Tuesday (24 March, 20:30): "Die Vyftigers" (featuring Neil Sandilands) is nearly sold out—grab the final 13 tickets now if you want to catch this local supergroup.
Option B: The High-Energy Party (Barnyard Tyger Valley)
Friday & Saturday (19:30): The flagship production "Absolute 80s" is in full swing. Think big hair, synthesizers, and five powerhouse vocalists. It’s built for groups who want to sing along at the top of their lungs.
Sunday Matinee (14:00): Same high-energy show, but a family-friendly afternoon slot. Pro Tip: Pensioners get 50% off the ticket price for the Sunday 14:00 matinee!
Next Thursday (26 March): A very special performance of Absolute 80s as a DCH Fundraising Concert. 100% of your R220 ticket goes directly to supporting the 144 children at the Durbanville Children’s Home.
📸 Through Your Lens: The 7550 Gallery
This week's photo was sent in by Kathrin van Rensburg and taken at Welgevonden Estate. Thanks for the beautiful shot, Kathrin!

Submit Yours: Reply to this email with your photo, your name, and where in Durbanville it was taken for next week's feature!
4. The Water Watch: 50.4% (Early Warning)
We have officially crossed a psychological threshold this morning. Dam levels have dipped to 50.4%, exactly 17.5% lower than this time last year. The City has moved to "Early Warning" status—let’s keep the hoses away and the pool covers on this weekend.
Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, explicitly stated today that we are in an "early warning phase" because consumption is consistently exceeding the 1,000 million litres per day (MLD) mark.
5. Community Spirit: The 7550 Heartbeat
DCH Volunteer Call: The Durbanville Children’s Home is looking for "Garden Fairies" to help finish the green spaces around the new Huis Andrag wing. Email [email protected] to join the volunteer pool.
Durbanville Library Book Sale: Support the Friends of the Library sale starting next Tuesday, 24 March. It’s a small way to ensure our local hub for learning and literacy continues to thrive.
6. Partner with the Hub: Get Your Business in Front of Durbanville
The Durbanville Hub is read every week by locals who are looking for recommendations they can trust. If you run a local business and want to reach a highly engaged, local audience without your message getting lost in the "noise" of social media, we’d love to chat.
Exclusivity Matters: We limit our featured slots to ensure our partners get genuine visibility—we don't believe in "directory clutter."
How it Works: For R325 per month, your business can be featured as a verified local partner in our directory and within this weekly dispatch.
Join Us: If you’re interested in growing your local footprint, simply reply to this email with "PARTNER" or a short note about what you do. We'll get back to you with the details on how to get started.
