Good morning, Durbanville!

If you feel like you’ve been living in an oven this week, you aren’t alone. We’ve seen blistering temperatures across the 7550, and unlike our usual valley patterns, that evening breeze has been noticeably absent, leaving the heat to linger long after the sun goes down. It’s peak harvest, peak heat, and a week of significant shifts in our local landscape.

1. Local Pulse: Infrastructure, Action & New Brews

  • The Racecourse Petition: A massive community petition is currently circulating regarding the proposed development at the Durbanville Racecourse. Residents are raising serious concerns about the plan for nearly 980 residential units, specifically the projected daily demand for 477 kilolitres of water and the impact on the Fisantekraal Wastewater Works. You can read the full report via [Cape Town ETC] or register your objection directly by emailing the project lead at [email protected].

  • There is also further information on the Durbanville Residents & Ratepayers Association Website.

  • The Groot Upgrade & City Cleanup: Construction has officially started at the Groot Phesantekraal entrance! As part of the widening of Klipheuwel and Wellington Roads, we are finally getting a traffic light at that gate.

    • Also Note: The City has terminated contracts with a major road and stormwater contractor due to serious corruption allegations. While this is a win for clean governance, it may cause a temporary "limbo" for some local resurfacing projects while new teams are appointed.

  • New Brews & Dutch Treats:

    • Platō Coffee: For your morning caffeine fix, the newest Platō branch is now officially serving at the KwikSpar Centre (Main Road, at the Durbanville High School circle). It’s a great spot to beat the town centre queues.

    • Holland Bakery: A massive welcome to the legendary Holland Bakery, now serving the village from Shop 1, 5 Pampoenkraal Lane. You no longer have to trek to their Kraaifontein hub for authentic Dutch boterkoek or bitterballen!

2. The "Big Stage": Legends at Die Boer

  • Tonight & Saturday (13–14 March): Mark Haze & The Family Band present their Tribute to Queen. This is high-energy rock at its best. There are less than 20 tickets left for each night—if you want to hear Bohemian Rhapsody done right, book now! (20:30 start).

  • Sunday Lunch (15 March): James Marais & Monique Cassells bring you "A Trip Down Memory Lane". A nostalgic journey through the 50s, 60s, and 70s starting at 14:00. Perfect for a cooler indoor lunch.

3. The Water Watch: 51.8% (Early Drought Caution)

The heat has been brutal, and our dams have felt it. The City has officially moved us into an "Early Drought Caution" this week.

  • Meaning of current status: ‘Continued water-wise use encouraged due to lower than anticipated dam levels, cautioning the possible start of a drought cycle.’

  • The Reality: Dam levels have dropped to 51.8%. We are currently using 1,018 million litres per day, which is well above the 975 million target.

  • The Gap: We are now 17.5% lower than we were this time last year.

  • The Action: Let’s lead the way—stop the garden hoses and only top up pools when absolutely necessary.

4. Community Spotlight: Durbanville Children's Home

The Durbanville Children’s Home needs the 7550's support for their major March fundraiser.

  • The Event: Absolute 80s! at the Barnyard Theatre, Tygervalley.

  • The Goal: Raising funds to revamp Huis Andrag, their youth development wing that prepares older children for independent adulthood.

  • The Difference You Can Make: Supporting this initiative isn't just about a great night out; it's about providing these kids with the life skills and foundation they need to build a future once they leave the home. Let’s show up for them and help turn their potential into independence.

  • Get Involved: Email [email protected] for tickets. 100% of the ticket price goes directly to the children in their care.

Durbanville has been looking particularly dramatic in this harvest light, and we want to start celebrating that right here in the Dispatch. Starting next week, we will be featuring a Weekly Reader Photo that captures the heart of our town.

  • How to Enter: Captured a great shot of the vineyards, a local landmark, or even just a beautiful corner of your garden?

  • Submit Yours: Simply reply to this email and attach your photo.

  • The Details: Please include your name and where in Durbanville the picture was taken so we can give you proper credit!

We can’t wait to see the 7550 through your lens.
