Good morning, Durbanville!

If you survived the Valentine’s Day rush last weekend, congratulations—you’ve officially earned a "normal" weekend. However, "normal" in the 7550 usually involves a vineyard, a trail, or a world-class show.

This weekend, we’re trading the roses for hiking boots as one of the year’s biggest outdoor festivals takes over Meerendal. Whether you’re hitting the trails or looking for a quiet Sunday reset, we’ve got the local inside track.

1. The Water Watch: The 57% Grind

We have officially dipped below the previous threshold, with Cape Town dam levels sitting at 57.2% as of this week.

  • The Reality Check: With temperatures forecast to hit a warm 28°C on Sunday, the heat is on.

  • The "Trail" Tip: If you’re heading out to the Stapfees or a local run this weekend, remember that a "cool down" shower doesn't need to be a long one. Cutting just two minutes off your post-exercise scrub can save up to 20 litres of water. Let’s keep those shower songs to a single chorus this week!

2. The Weekend Headliner: Weg! Stapfees (20–22 Feb)

One of the biggest events on the Western Cape hiking calendar is happening right on our doorstep at Meerendal Wine Estate.

  • What to Expect: A three-day festival of trails, gear, and mountain vibes. Even if you aren't doing the 21km "Big Walk," it’s worth heading up for the festival atmosphere.

  • āš ļø Traffic Alert: If you usually do the Saturday morning Parkrun at Meerendal, expect significant congestion. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to find parking, or consider pivoting to the Durbanville Parkrun at the Racecourse for a quieter 5km this week.

3. The "Sunday Reset": Culture & Coffee

If your legs are tired just thinking about the Stapfees, Sunday offers a much more relaxed pace:

  • "LEKKER" at Die Boer (Sunday, 22 Feb): Zanne Stapelberg & Albie van Schalkwyk are performing their show "LEKKER" at 14:00. It’s a brilliant mix of opera, musicals, and African music.

  • The Hidden Gem: Starke Brews: To escape the heat, head to Starke Brews on Contermanskloof Road. It’s a rustic microbrewery with massive trees for shade and wood-fired pizzas. It’s very family-friendly (big sandpit!) and open until 16:00 on Sundays.

  • 🚲 Road Alert (Sunday Morning): The Tour de PPA cycling race starts and ends at the Durbanville Racecourse on Sunday morning. Expect large groups of cyclists on the roads heading out towards Adderley Road and Philadelphia. Drive with extra care!

4. The Mid-Week Motivation (23 – 26 Feb)

Why wait for the weekend? Next week has some massive mid-week highlights:

  • Tuesday (24th): Danie Reenwolf (frontman of Spoegwolf) brings his legendary solo storytelling and music to Die Boer at 20:30. Tickets are R290.

  • Wednesday (25th): Become a winemaker for a night at Durbanville Hills with their Harvest Blending Experience. Includes a cellar tour, blending your own bottle to take home, and a two-course dinner at The Tangram (R550).

5. The Local Pulse: Quick Hits

  • Book Ahead: The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is coming to the Hillcrest Quarry in early March. Tickets are live on Webtickets—this is a "book now" event.

  • Nature Hack: Skip the Stapfees crowds and head to Tygerberg Nature Reserve. The views are crisp this week, and entry is approx. R30.

  • Coming Up: The Muratie Full Moon Hike is set for next Sunday, 1 March. Pack a headlamp for the 3.5km sunset loop!

6. Partner Spotlight: A Post-Trail Treat at Nitida

Once you’ve finished up at the Meerendal trails, take the 15-minute drive across the valley to Nitida Wine Estate.

  • The Wine Window: Ring the brass bell at their rustic window for a unique tasting experience.

  • The Platters at Tables: If you're feeling peckish, Tables at Nitida serves fantastic sharing platters. Choose between the Meat Platter (selection of cold meats, salami, olives, preserves, and ciabatta for R230) or the Cheese Platter (four local cheeses, fresh fruit, and preserves for R185).

    • Pro Tip: They are pet-friendly and have a massive lawn, making it the perfect spot to park the dogs and the kids after a morning on the trails.

7. Small Business Corner: Get Online by March
